Jagannath University staff demand internal appointment for treasurer post

The Jagannath University (JnU) Teachers' Association has issued a strong warning against appointing an external candidate as the university's treasurer. At an emergency press conference, representatives from the teachers', officers', employees', and students' associations declared they would not accept an outsider for the position. They are demanding that the post be filled by one of their own faculty members.

JnU Teachers' Association General Secretary Prof. Imranul Haque stated that the university has 732 teachers, including 245 professors, indicating a sufficient pool of qualified internal candidates. "Our own teachers understand the university's realities and challenges. The next treasurer should therefore be appointed from among JnU teachers," he asserted. He questioned the rationale for seeking an external appointee when JnU teachers have previously held leadership roles, such as vice-chancellor and treasurer, at other institutions.

Adding weight to the demand, Abdul Halim, president of the university's Officers' Association, warned that officers and employees would initiate a strike if an outsider is appointed treasurer. The press conference saw representatives from teachers, officers, employees, and students, operating under the banner "Team Jagannath," pledge their solidarity and commitment to united action to press their demand.

This call comes at a time when the government is reportedly reshuffling key administrative positions at public universities, leading to discussions about the appointment of a new treasurer for JnU. The unified stance of the university community underscores their determination to ensure the position is filled internally.
