Jakarta airport suspends flights over Mount Anak Krakatau ash, affecting Singapore Airlines

Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport suspended flight operations until 9:30 a.m. on Sunday after volcanic ash from the ongoing eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau was detected at the airport.

The suspension extended an earlier closure that had been scheduled to end at 5:30 a.m. Indonesia’s transportation ministry said 33 flights were affected, including several international services.

Singapore Airlines cancelled two flights to and from Jakarta on Saturday. A third flight bound for Jakarta, originally scheduled for Saturday night, moved to Sunday afternoon. Another service scheduled to leave Jakarta for Singapore on Sunday morning was delayed until 3:50 p.m.

“As the situation remains fluid, other SIA flights between Singapore and Indonesia may be affected,” the airline said. It advised passengers to check its flight status page for the latest information.

Mount Anak Krakatau has been erupting since late Friday, and the transportation ministry said volcanic ash was detected at the airport early Sunday. Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency said Saturday that the volcano posed no imminent tsunami risk.
