Jakarta court upholds 15-year sentence, increases restitution to $13.4 trillion for oil corruption convict

The DKI Jakarta High Court has upheld a 15-year prison sentence for Muhamad Kerry Adrianto Riza, who was convicted in a corruption case related to the management of crude oil. The court also significantly increased the restitution payment he must make to approximately 13.4 trillion Indonesian Rupiah (about $820 million USD).

In its appellate ruling, the court affirmed the 15-year jail term for Riza, who is the son of fugitive corruption suspect Riza Chalid. He was also fined 500 million Rupiah, with a substitute jail term of 140 days if the fine is not paid. This fine is lower than the 1 billion Rupiah imposed in the initial trial.

However, the restitution order was substantially increased. The appellate court mandated a payment of 13.4 trillion Rupiah, comprising 2.9 trillion Rupiah for state losses and 10.5 trillion Rupiah for economic losses. If Riza cannot cover this amount, he faces an additional 10 years in prison.

At the first instance trial at the Jakarta Corruption Court, Riza also received a 15-year sentence. He was fined 1 billion Rupiah and ordered to pay restitution of over 2.9 trillion Rupiah. The initial ruling cited evidence from a financial audit by the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) that identified state losses amounting to 9.4 trillion Rupiah in the crude oil management case.
