Jakarta police deploy over 18,000 officers for planned protests

Jakarta authorities have mobilized a substantial contingent of 18,504 police officers to ensure security during planned demonstrations in Central Jakarta. The operation, set for Thursday, August 27, focuses on providing a safe environment for citizens to express their aspirations.

Kombes Reynold EP Hutagalung, the Central Jakarta Police Chief, stated that the security measures will prioritize a humanistic approach. He assured the public that police officers on duty would not be carrying firearms or sharp weapons, aiming to foster trust and facilitate communication. The security plan involves a layered defense system across six zones, covering key areas such as the parliament complex (Ring 1), surrounding areas up to Semanggi, and other strategic points like the Pancasila Gate and Palmerah Station. Personnel are also stationed in areas like Bundaran HI and Dukuh Atas to anticipate crowd movements and manage traffic impacts.

In addition to crowd control, traffic police are prepared for situational traffic management and diversions if necessary, particularly if protests lead to road blockages. Reynold urged motorists to be aware of the situation, follow officers' directions, and use alternative routes if density increases. He also appealed to the protesters to refrain from anarchic actions or damaging public facilities, emphasizing the importance of maintaining order and respecting public property.
