Jakarta Tax Data Safe After Bapenda Building Fire

A fire that broke out Friday night at the Jakarta Regional Revenue Agency (Bapenda) building has not compromised the security of tax data or public services, Governor Anies Baswedan assured Saturday.

"Jakarta's tax data is safe because it has been digitally backed up, so tax services will not be disrupted," Baswedan said in a statement. He emphasized that public services remain the top priority and urged citizens not to worry.

The blaze, which occurred on Jalan Abdul Muis in Central Jakarta, affected floors 11 through 16 of the building. Firefighters battled the flames from approximately 9:30 p.m. Friday until 2:00 a.m. Saturday, with 37 fire units and 185 personnel involved. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported.

However, the fire did impact the Traffic Management Control (TMC) or Intelligent Traffic Control System (ITCS) of the Transportation Agency, located on the 16th floor. This system previously managed traffic lights automatically at several intersections. Consequently, traffic light control has reverted to manual operation.

To mitigate potential traffic disruptions, Baswedan has instructed the Transportation Agency to deploy additional personnel to key intersections. Manual traffic management will be in place until the automated system can be restored. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, with authorities coordinating to determine its origin. The Bapenda building is insured, and affected civil servants will work remotely or from alternative provincial government sites.
