Jamaat leader urges justice for July killings, calls for state recognition of martyrs

Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has called on the government to expedite trials for those involved in the July killings, emphasizing that justice for the victims is a way to show gratitude for the current political landscape. Addressing a rally in Dhaka's Mirpur-10, Rahman stated that the sacrifices made during the July Uprising were instrumental in establishing the present government and opposition, and should not be disregarded.

Rahman expressed concern that the promised trials for the killings were losing momentum and warned of repercussions if justice is delayed. "If the souls of the martyrs curse us, no one will be able to live in peace. Therefore, ensure justice. Focus on the trial," he urged. He also highlighted that many within the ruling party had also suffered from killings and enforced disappearances, underscoring the government's responsibility to ensure justice for all victims.

We request the government to learn to show gratitude to July. Do not ignore or disrespect those because of whom today's parliament, today's government and today's opposition exist.

Furthermore, the Jamaat chief demanded state recognition for those killed and injured during the July movement. He proposed that martyrs be honored with state awards, their contributions integrated into history and textbooks, and that those permanently injured receive adequate medical treatment and financial support. Rahman also called for respect for the people's verdict in the referendum.
