Jamaica and U.S. Sign Deal to Bolster Military Cooperation

Jamaica and the United States have formalized their security partnership with the signing of a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA). This agreement establishes the conditions for U.S. military personnel to be present in Jamaica for agreed-upon activities, including joint training and operations.

The agreement establishes the terms under which members of the United States Armed Forces may be temporarily present in Jamaica for mutually agreed activities, including training exercises and joint operations.

The SOFA builds upon a long history of security cooperation between the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and U.S. forces. This collaboration has included joint exercises, professional exchanges, and disaster response efforts. The recent signing follows a bilateral meeting between U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Jamaica’s Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Horace Chang in Panama.

The governments said the agreement is intended to deepen cooperation in the fight against criminal organisations and narco-terrorists involved in the trafficking of guns, drugs and people.

Both governments stated the agreement is designed to strengthen their joint efforts in combating criminal organizations and narco-terrorists involved in trafficking. It also provides a structured approach for cooperation in areas such as regional security and disaster preparedness. Jamaica now joins over 120 nations with similar agreements with the United States, creating a modern and predictable framework for their security partnership.
