Jamaica: Ministers to Meet Transport Operators Amid Strike Threat Over Fare Hikes

The Government is sensitive to challenges facing members of the public who have been trying to cope with price adjustments caused by developments across the globe.

At the heart of the matter is the long-standing demand for a fare increase by public transport operators. This demand has been amplified by the recent surge in global fuel prices, a direct consequence of ongoing geopolitical tensions. The operators argue that these increased costs are making it increasingly difficult to sustain their services under the current fare structure.

We are also aware of and appreciate the concerns of public transport operators who have been expectant of a fare increase for some time now and are also now facing the burden of increased fuel costs.

Finance and Public Service Minister Fayval Williams and Transport Minister Daryl Vaz are set to lead the discussions. Their objective is to find a balanced solution that acknowledges the genuine concerns of the operators, including the burden of increased fuel costs, while also being sensitive to the financial pressures faced by the general public. The government recognizes the need to strike a delicate balance to avoid significant negative consequences for the economy and society at large.

We also recognise that it is important that a balance be struck and a solution arrived at which does not have major negative consequences for our economy and wider society.
