Jamaica opposition demands transparency over Venezuelan airline incident

Jamaica's main opposition party is demanding answers from the government over an incident involving a Venezuelan airline that allegedly left passengers stranded for hours.

The People's National Party (PNP) stated it has closely reviewed public comments from the Venezuelan Consortium of Aeronautical Industries and Air Services (Conviasa) concerning a flight diversion to Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston. Conviasa issued a strong statement accusing Jamaican authorities of failing to provide basic assistance and operational support to passengers and crew after an "unforeseen circumstance" forced a flight from Cancún, Mexico, to Maiquetía, Venezuela, to land in Jamaica. Passengers reportedly remained on the tarmac for approximately eight hours.

Senator Donna Scott-Mottley, the PNP's Spokesperson on Foreign and Regional Affairs, highlighted that reports of extended delays and concerns about passenger welfare raise serious questions. She emphasized Jamaica's obligations as a member of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and a signatory to the Chicago Convention, which mandate prompt assistance to passengers and crew without discrimination. Scott-Mottley stressed these are binding obligations crucial for global aviation safety and Jamaica's international standing.

In response to the incident, the PNP is calling for a comprehensive and transparent report detailing the sequence of events and decision-making processes. They also seek clarification on government policies for handling diverted aircraft, especially in emergencies, and an assessment of passenger care measures to ensure they meet international standards. The party further urged immediate steps to enhance inter-agency coordination during aviation incidents with potential legal or diplomatic sensitivities. "Jamaica's international reputation was built not only on compliance with the law, but on the humane and dignified treatment of all who pass through our borders," Scott-Mottley stated, urging accountability and steps to prevent future occurrences.
