James Burrows, the celebrated director behind some of television's most beloved comedies, died Friday at the age of 85. His family confirmed his peaceful passing in a statement to People, surrounded by loved ones.

Burrows carved out a legendary career specializing in situation comedies, directing more than a thousand episodes of iconic shows. He was instrumental in creating "Cheers," directing 243 of its 273 episodes, and helmed all 246 episodes of "Will & Grace." His extensive credits also include multiple episodes of "Frasier," "Friends," and "Mike & Molly," as well as the pilot episodes for "Two and a Half Men" and "The Big Bang Theory."

Though often unseen by viewers, Burrows's influence on television comedy was profound. He began his television directing career in 1974, working on shows like "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and "Laverne & Shirley." His memoir, "Directed by James Burrows," published in 2022, reflected his philosophy: "When I direct a television show, I try to reach that sweet spot where the best script meets the best performance and the best chemistry between performers."

Born in Los Angeles in 1940, Burrows was the son of Broadway writer, director, and producer Abe Burrows. He attended LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and earned a degree from Oberlin College before pursuing graduate studies at the Yale School of Drama.
