Jann Arden to perform at pro-Canada concert before Alberta separation vote

Jann Arden will join other Alberta performers at a free concert in Calgary organized to promote national unity before the province’s fall referendum.

The Forever Canadian campaign says the Calgary Concert for Unity will take place on Sept. 20 at The Confluence Historic Site, also known as Fort Calgary. Folk musicians Celeigh Cardinal, Reuben Bullock and John Wort Hannam, along with jazz singer Caity Gyorgy, are also scheduled to perform.

The campaign says Alberta’s place is within Confederation and is urging residents to gather as “loud and proud Canadians.” The event comes before the Oct. 19 referendum, which will ask Albertans whether they want to remain part of Canada or hold a second, binding vote on separation.

Supporters of separation argue that Alberta does not need Ottawa and can operate independently. Opponents say Canada can function as it is and warn that leaving could threaten Indigenous treaty rights.
