Japan Earthquake Triggers Explosion at AEON Mall; At Least 2 Dead

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake rocked Japan's Kumamoto prefecture on April 28, triggering a massive explosion at the AEON MALL in Kashima town. The blast, suspected to be a gas leak, occurred after the earthquake, causing significant structural damage to the shopping center.

As of early April 29, rescue teams had recovered eight people from the damaged building. Tragically, two women in their 20s were confirmed dead, and one individual was found without vital signs. Five others sustained injuries but are reported to be out of immediate danger.

Reports indicate that approximately 200 customers and staff had already evacuated the AEON MALL following the earthquake before the explosion occurred. While some media suggested between 20 to 30 people might have been trapped inside, authorities are still working to ascertain the exact number of individuals affected. The rescue operation involves a coordinated effort between firefighters, police, and the Self-Defense Forces.

While authorities are investigating the exact cause, a Japanese government official noted that a gas leak had been reported prior to the explosion. The main gas valve was shut off, and rescue operations commenced immediately. The explosion caused parts of the second floor to collapse and exterior walls to peel away, revealing the building's steel frame.
