Japan holds first test launch of Tomahawk missile from warship

Japan has successfully conducted its first test launch of a Tomahawk cruise missile from a warship, marking a significant advancement in its military capabilities. The test, involving the destroyer JS Chokai, took place in the Pacific Ocean on July 29.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed the launch's success, stating it verified operational readiness, including the crew's proficiency. This milestone is crucial for Japan's new defense strategy, which emphasizes long-range strike capabilities to deter potential aggression from rivals like China and North Korea.

Tokyo has placed an order for around 400 Tomahawk missiles from the United States, with deliveries scheduled to be completed by March 2028. While a Bloomberg report in April suggested potential delivery disruptions due to the missiles' use in the war against Iran, Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi previously stated in March that the initial shipment had arrived and that there were no changes to the overall delivery schedule for other missiles.

The US$2.35 billion order, finalized in 2024, represents one of the largest foreign military sales of Tomahawk missiles. This development underscores Japan's commitment to bolstering its defense posture in the face of evolving regional security challenges.
