Japan partially reveals security strategy revisions, plans long-range missiles and drones

Japan has partially unveiled revisions to its key security policy documents, signaling a significant shift in its defense posture. The updated "Security Three Documents", National Security Strategy, National Defense Strategy, and Defense Force Development Plan, include plans to acquire long-range missiles capable of striking targets over 1,000 kilometers away and to introduce long-range drones.

The Japanese government stated that securing a sufficient quantity and quality of long-range missiles is crucial for maintaining future deterrence against potential adversaries. This move is interpreted as an effort to bolster its "war-sustaining capability" through enhanced counter-attack abilities. The revisions also emphasize the need for interceptor missiles and drones for defense purposes, alongside strengthening air defense and surveillance capabilities in the Pacific region.

These strategic adjustments coincide with a substantial proposed increase in Japan's defense budget. For the upcoming fiscal year, the government has reportedly earmarked a record 8.9 trillion yen (approximately $79.5 billion) for defense spending. This significant financial commitment underscores Japan's determination to bolster its military strength and adapt to the evolving security landscape in East Asia.
