Japan Quake Rattles South Korea's Yeongnam Region, Hundreds Report Tremors

An earthquake with a maximum intensity of 7 struck near Kumamoto, Japan, on June 28, causing noticeable tremors and prompting numerous reports from residents across South Korea's Yeongnam region.

The earthquake occurred at approximately 4:27 PM local time, about 23 kilometers south of Kumamoto City on Japan's Kyushu island. Intensity 7 signifies that most unsecured furniture moves or topples. In Busan, a measured intensity of III was detected, a level where some people indoors might feel the shaking, and stationary vehicles might sway slightly.

Following the quake, the Busan Metropolitan Fire and Disaster Headquarters received 291 reports by 5:16 PM, with residents describing sensations ranging from feeling tremors in areas like Haeundae to their entire homes shaking. The Gyeongnam Provincial Fire Department reported 177 calls, Gyeongbuk Provincial Fire Department 59, and the Ulsan Metropolitan Fire Department 120 by late afternoon.

Despite the widespread reports of shaking, emergency services stated that no significant damage or unusual situations have been confirmed. Authorities are responding to inquiries by explaining the situation and providing guidance on earthquake safety procedures. Notably, key nuclear power plants in the region, including Gori in Busan and Wolsong in Gyeongju, reported no abnormalities.
