Japan, Vietnam to jointly develop high-speed landing craft amid regional tensions

Japan and Vietnam have officially entered consultations to jointly develop and produce high-speed landing craft, a move seen as a significant step in bolstering defense cooperation within the Indo-Pacific region. The initiative is primarily aimed at countering China's growing influence and expansion in the South China Sea.

During a meeting in Tokyo, Japanese Defense Minister Koizumi Shinjiro and Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Phan Van Giang agreed to establish a framework for defense equipment and technology cooperation. While the discussions are in preliminary stages, the agreement lays the political groundwork for future collaboration on military hardware.

The high-speed landing craft are intended for amphibious assault operations and disaster relief, enabling rapid transport of personnel and supplies from offshore vessels to shorelines. These craft are expected to offer superior mobility compared to traditional landing boats.
