Japanese brand Kurun Tokyo brings artisan-made ballet flats to Singapore

Japanese footwear brand Kurun Tokyo has launched its inaugural overseas retail presence in Singapore, establishing a new store at Takashimaya Shopping Centre. The brand, known for its meticulously handcrafted ballet flats, aims to blend sophisticated style with the comfort typically associated with sneakers.

Takahiro Yamashita, director of Kurun Tokyo, explained the inherent challenges in designing ballet flats, noting their minimalist structure demands precise pattern-making to integrate support features without compromising aesthetics. "Ballet flats require extremely delicate design and construction. If even one element is compromised, the balance between comfort and aesthetics can easily be lost," he stated.

Founded in 2019, Kurun Tokyo has deliberately focused on perfecting a single product category. "We believe there is growing value in focusing on a single category and becoming truly exceptional within that field," Yamashita said. The brand seeks to overcome common issues like discomfort, poor breathability, and limited fashion appeal, offering a comfortable alternative that remains a versatile wardrobe staple.

The shoes are crafted by experienced artisans in Tokyo's Asakusa district, an area renowned for its shoemaking heritage. This artisanal approach is central to Kurun Tokyo's commitment to quality and comfort. The brand's expansion into Singapore follows observed interest after a previous pop-up event, solidifying its position as a unique offering in the global footwear market.
