Japanese Man Achieves Early Retirement, Finds True Happiness in Community Connection

The dream of financial independence and early retirement (FIRE) is a common aspiration, but for one 45-year-old Japanese man, achieving it brought an unexpected realization about the true meaning of happiness.

Known as Kobayashi (a pseudonym), he worked for 22 years at a Tokyo IT firm, holding a management position and earning an annual salary of approximately 13 million yen. Starting in his thirties, he diligently invested in global stock index funds and U.S. ETFs, consistently contributing over 300,000 yen monthly. By the time he retired, his financial assets had grown to about 160 million yen (approximately 31.25 million yuan).

Kobayashi calculated that his investments could generate an annual return of about 4%, yielding roughly 6.4 million yen per year. This income, he believed, would comfortably cover his annual living expenses of 4.5 million yen, even including his 250,000 yen monthly rent for a luxury downtown apartment. Confident in his financial security, he declared, "I'll never have to work again in my life."

Initially, his retirement was filled with leisure activities: daily workouts, fine dining, reading, and enjoying city views. However, after just two months, a stark reality hit him. Checking his phone's step count, he realized he had walked only 1,500 steps all day and, more alarmingly, had not spoken a single word to anyone. The constant interaction of his working life, meetings, colleagues, clients, was replaced by silence. Even when meeting former colleagues, the conversations revolved around company updates, making him feel like an outsider.

A turning point came when he saw a social media post about a book club in a revitalized old neighborhood.
