Japanese trainee sent to prosecutors for disappearing before idol group debut, costing agency $42,000

A Japanese trainee singer, who was on the verge of debuting with a K-pop idol group, has been handed over to prosecutors on charges of fraud and causing financial harm to his agency. The 29-year-old trainee disappeared in December last year, just two months before the group's planned debut.

According to police, the trainee left behind a statement citing a "breakdown of trust" before vanishing. At the time of his disappearance, the six-member boy group had completed all preparations for their debut, including music video shoots, song production, and member reveals. The agency reported that the trainee's sudden exit resulted in financial losses amounting to approximately 57.43 million won (about $42,000) for training and debut preparation costs incurred over four months.

The agency filed a complaint against the trainee in March. Following the complaint, authorities placed the trainee under an overseas travel ban while conducting an investigation. The agency also claims the trainee signed a contract with another entertainment company while still under an exclusive contract with them, adding another layer to the legal dispute.

As a consequence of the trainee's actions, the agency was forced to proceed with the debut of the group in February with only five members. The case highlights the significant financial risks and operational disruptions that can arise from sudden contract breaches in the highly competitive K-pop industry.
