Jared Moskowitz wins Florida primary; Trump-backed remap shapes November races

Jared Moskowitz has secured the Democratic primary victory in Florida's 25th congressional district, defeating challenger Oliver Larkin. The race took place in a newly drawn district, part of a Republican-led redistricting effort aimed at increasing GOP representation in Congress.

Primary elections in Florida and Alaska on Tuesday were closely observed for indicators of party strength ahead of the November midterm elections, which will determine control of the U.S. House and Senate. In another Florida contest, Republican state representative Mike Beltran was projected to win the nomination in the 14th district, now considered to lean Republican, where he will face Democratic Representative Kathy Castor.

Alaska's unique nonpartisan Senate primary also saw incumbent Republican Dan S. Sullivan facing a challenger with a nearly identical name, Dan J. Sullivan. President Donald Trump publicly urged voters to support the incumbent, calling the challenger an "imposter." The Justice Department is reportedly investigating the challenger's motives for entering the race.

Florida's new congressional map, approved by the Republican-controlled legislature, is anticipated to boost Republican chances of retaining House control, potentially adding up to four seats. This map could result in a delegation of 24 Republicans and only four Democrats from Florida, a state that Donald Trump won by a significant margin.
