Jay Clayton to take charge as US Director of National Intelligence on Monday after Bill Pulte's exit

Bill Pulte's brief tenure as acting Director of National Intelligence concludes Monday, with Jay Clayton poised to take over after Senate confirmation. Pulte, a housing executive without prior national security experience, served for two months. During his time, he implemented significant staffing cuts across the intelligence community and oversaw the declassification of documents tied to former President Donald Trump's unsubstantiated claims of 2020 election fraud. Pulte announced the transition on social media, stating he had spoken with President Trump and Clayton. He expressed gratitude to Trump for the opportunity to serve and offered Clayton his full support. "I have no doubt that Jay will do a tremendous job," Pulte wrote. Clayton inherits an intelligence office whose authority is reportedly at a historic low. Critics had voiced concerns about Pulte's appointment due to his lack of national security background. However, some Republican Senate Intelligence Committee staffers reportedly found satisfaction with the bureaucratic reductions he achieved. The office's size had faced bipartisan criticism for being too large. CNN reported that Pulte had sought to extend his term, arguing his work was unfinished. He reportedly traveled with Trump on Friday. CIA Director John Ratcliffe, who recommended Clayton and influenced Pulte's tenure, was also seen with the President.
