Jeju Island on Alert for Strong Winds, Potential Flight Disruptions

Jeju Island is bracing for strong winds, with the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) issuing advisories for most of the region. As of July 14, strong wind advisories are in effect across the island, excluding the southern part of Seogwipo City. The KMA reported wind speeds nearing 20 meters per second, particularly in mountainous areas.

The strong winds have already impacted air travel, with significant flight cancellations reported on July 12. The Jeju International Airport recorded instantaneous wind speeds of up to 17.7 meters per second. The KMA forecasts that winds exceeding 20 meters per second will persist until the morning of July 15.

While emergency services have not yet received reports of major wind-related damage, authorities are urging caution. High waves are expected across most of Jeju's offshore waters, with the exception of the northern coastal area. Waves of 1.5 to 3.5 meters are predicted, accompanied by strong winds. Coastal residents and visitors are advised to exercise extreme care due to the potential for large waves and rip currents, especially at beaches. The KMA emphasized the need for proper facility management and vigilance against safety accidents.
