Jeong Cheong-rae: 'One person, one vote' system will eliminate party factions

Jeong Cheong-rae, leader of South Korea's Democratic Party, declared that the implementation of a "one person, one vote" system would lead to the dissolution of internal party factions. Speaking at a Supreme Council meeting, Jeong asserted that party member sovereignty and the "one person, one vote" principle are undeniable values.

He argued that this reform would free lawmakers from the need to appease factional leaders, enabling them to concentrate on their legislative duties and base their political careers on evaluations by party members. Jeong suggested this would fulfill the aspirations of former presidents Roh Moo-hyun and Lee Hae-chan for a more democratic party structure.

Jeong also addressed the ongoing discussions about party factions, stating that while he dislikes being categorized, he identifies as a "party member faction" and a "reformist faction." He emphasized that all members of the Democratic Party support President Lee Jae-myung's administration, making them all "pro-Lee" and thus part of the party member and reformist factions.

Furthermore, Jeong praised President Lee Jae-myung's engagement at the G7 summit, calling it a display of South Korea's indispensable role on the world stage. He also criticized the election management failures, such as ballot shortages, and condemned the opposition party's "election fraud conspiracy theories" as anti-constitutional and anti-democratic, calling for thorough investigations and accountability.
