Jeong Cheong-rae's campaign receives 380 million won overnight, asks supporters to donate elsewhere

Jeong Cheong-rae, a candidate for the leadership of the Democratic Party, announced that his campaign received an overwhelming 380 million won (approximately $275,000 USD) in donations in a single night. He attributed the surge to a broadcast highlighting that his fundraising goal was not yet met.

It's a big problem. It seems a broadcast reported that my fundraising account was still short by 20 million won. Seeing that broadcast, a whopping 380 million won poured in overnight. I have to return 360 million won individually. It's cumbersome, but it's tearfully grateful.

In a Facebook post, Jeong expressed gratitude for the massive influx of support, noting that over 7,700 individuals contributed, with an average donation of 46,000 won. However, he stated that 360 million won of this amount would need to be returned due to the oversubscription. He humorously described the situation as a "big problem" but also "tearfully grateful."

Jeong urged his supporters to cease sending donations to his account and instead direct their contributions to the campaigns of three other candidates: Choi Min-hee, Lee Seong-yun, and Han Min-soo. These individuals are considered part of Jeong's political faction, often referred to as 'pro-Jeong Cheong-rae' (친정청래계), and are running for positions on the party's Supreme Council.

The deadline for candidate registration for the party's August 17 convention was set for that afternoon. Jeong is among five candidates vying for the party leadership, including former Prime Minister Kim Han-gil, Song Young-gil, Go Min-jung, and Kim Bo-mi.
