Jessica Oji wins historic World U20 Shot Put gold for Nigeria

Jessica Oji has made history for Nigeria, becoming the country's first field event gold medalist at the World U20 Athletics Championships. The 19-year-old secured the women's shot put title early Friday morning in Oregon with a remarkable throw of 18.08 meters.

Oji delivered a consistently strong performance throughout the final, opening with 18.05m and improving to her winning mark of 18.08m. She followed up with throws of 17.95m and 18.07m, with two fouls in between. She was the sole competitor to surpass the 18-meter mark.

Prior to Oji's achievement, Nigeria had never won a field event gold at this competition. The nation's previous field event medals were Esther Aghatise's silver in the long jump in 2002 and Chinecherem Nnamdi's bronze in the javelin in 2021. This win marks a significant milestone for Nigerian athletics, particularly in field events where the country has historically seen less success compared to sprints and jumps.

This historic victory caps an extraordinary year for the young athlete. Oji switched her allegiance from the United States to Nigeria on February 2, celebrated her 19th birthday on June 23, won a Commonwealth Games silver medal on July 29, and has now added a World U20 gold. Her success at the Commonwealth Games just a week prior announced her arrival on the senior international stage, and she has now elevated her performance by becoming a World Junior champion.
