Jetstar to charge new fees for overhead carry-on baggage

Budget airline Jetstar is set to introduce new fees for carry-on baggage stowed in overhead lockers, a change that will take effect from February 2027. Under the new policy, passengers will only be allowed one small personal item, such as a backpack or handbag, to be stored under the seat at no additional cost. Any additional carry-on luggage intended for overhead compartments will incur a fee, starting at $25 for domestic flights and potentially reaching $52 for international routes. Jetstar's chief executive, Stephanie Tully, explained that the move is in line with practices of other low-fare carriers globally. She cited customer feedback indicating that baggage weighing at the gate and the struggle to find overhead space were significant sources of stress. The airline believes the new model will allow for better utilization of overhead locker space, streamline the boarding process, and contribute to more punctual departures. Tully emphasized that the system offers customers greater choice, allowing them to pay only for the baggage they need, thereby helping to maintain lower fares. The dimensions for the under-seat bag will be restricted to 40x30x20cm, while overhead bags must not exceed 56x36x23cm. Checked baggage fees remain unchanged.
