Jetstar to charge passengers up to $52 to put baggage in overhead lockers

Budget airline Jetstar is set to overhaul its carry-on baggage policy in February 2027, eliminating the long-standing 7kg weight limit for cabin bags.

We know that weighing carry-on bags at the gate can be frustrating for our customers and for our crew.

Under the new system, all passengers will be permitted one underseat bag, such as a backpack or laptop case. Those requiring additional space for a larger carry-on item to be stowed in the overhead locker can purchase a "Priority Carry-on" fee. The cost of this upgrade varies by route, ranging from $25 on domestic flights to as much as $52 for international journeys.

Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully explained that the changes are a response to customer and crew feedback, aiming to alleviate the stress associated with gate-weighing bags and the struggle for overhead locker space. "By giving customers an underseat bag with the option to add Priority Carry-on, we can make better use of overhead locker space, streamline boarding and help more flights depart on time," Tully stated. The airline emphasizes that this model offers customers more choice and allows them to pay only for the baggage space they need, helping to maintain low fares.

While the weight limit is removed, size restrictions will still apply. Underseat bags must not exceed 40x30x20cm, and overhead bags must be within 56x36x23cm. The airline also noted that customers traveling with infants can bring an additional underseat bag for baby items at no extra cost. Checked baggage allowances remain unchanged.
