Jewish Democrat Jeremy Moss defeats pro-Palestinian rival in Michigan primary

Michigan state Sen. Jeremy Moss, a Jewish Democrat, has secured the party's nomination for the state's 11th Congressional District. The Associated Press called the race for Moss after 74% of the vote was counted, with him leading his closest rival, pro-Palestinian attorney Aisha Farooqi, by a significant margin. Moss garnered 49.2% of the vote compared to Farooqi's 32.9%.

The district, located in Oakland County, a Detroit suburb, has a high concentration of Jewish residents. It includes Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, which was previously damaged in an attack. Moss, who has spoken out against antisemitism from the state house floor, expressed his gratitude to his supporters on X/Twitter, stating, "Thank you, Oakland County! It’s the honor of a lifetime to be your Democratic nominee."

While Moss has not centered his campaign on Israel, he has historically supported liberal pro-Israel positions, including a two-state solution. In 2024, he wrote on X, "The overwhelming majority of American Jewish voters believe that both Israel has a right to defend itself from terrorism & Palestinians have a right to self-determination in a peace-seeking state." He also highlighted other liberal issues during his campaign and received limited funding from pro-Israel groups. His opponents attempted to link him to the lobbying powerhouse AIPAC, whose substantial spending in the Senate race became a focal point.

Moss indicated to Jewish Insider that he believed some of these attacks "touch many people’s ears as if it’s trafficking antisemitism." Some of his prominent Jewish supporters, who have reportedly vowed to fundraise for the Republican candidate if his opponent in the Senate primary loses, also expressed their support for Moss.
