Jigawa Assembly suspends LG speaker over anti-party activities

Haruna Maigari, the Speaker of the Auyo Legislative Council in Jigawa State, has been suspended by the State House of Assembly due to alleged anti-party activities. The decision, made during a plenary session on Tuesday, comes amidst a broader wave of suspensions within the state's All Progressives Congress (APC) following recent primary elections.

The motion for Maigari's suspension was introduced by the Majority Leader, Lawan Dansure. Dansure asserted that Maigari's conduct was detrimental to the APC's unity, stability, and progress, emphasizing the need to protect the party's integrity ahead of the 2027 elections. He argued that such grassroots-level misconduct could negatively impact the party's electoral performance.

Following the adoption of the motion, the Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Haruna Dangyatin, announced Maigari's immediate suspension. Dangyatin stated that the House would not tolerate challenges to party discipline and established an investigative committee to examine the allegations. This committee is tasked with presenting its findings and recommendations within two weeks. Maigari has been directed to immediately hand over all official documents to the Deputy Speaker of the Auyo Legislative Council to ensure the continuity of council business.
