Jigawa university lecturers give government two weeks to avert strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities branch at Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa, has given the Jigawa State Government two weeks to settle outstanding payments or face a strike beginning September 15, 2026.

The union said it reached the decision at a special congress held to assess implementation of the 2025 agreement between ASUU and the Federal Government. In a statement signed by branch Chairman Idris Chiromawa and Secretary Salisu Yunusa, it demanded full implementation of the agreement and payment of arrears dating from January 2026.

The lecturers also called for outstanding responsibility allowances, annual increments owed since 2023, promotion arrears outstanding since 2024, third-party deductions and the approved 2024/2025 Earned Academic Allowance. They asked the government to remit the deductions and reconsider its decision to reduce the university’s share of the statutory Local Government Contribution from 2 percent to 0.7 percent.

We have issued a two-week ultimatum to the Jigawa State Government to fully implement the 2025 ASUU-FGN agreement and pay the accrued arrears from January 2026 to date.

The branch further demanded that Sule Lamido University be exempted from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, saying the system does not conform to the institution’s particular circumstances. Similar ASUU branches elsewhere in Nigeria have made demands over unpaid arrears and stalled promotions.

The congress will proceed on an industrial action effective from 15th September 2026 should the Government fail to implement the agreement.
