Jigawa varsity seeks police support to tackle cultism on campus

The Federal University Dutse (FUD) in Jigawa State is seeking robust support from the Jigawa State Police Command to combat a growing trend of cultism and other anti-social behaviors on campus. The university administration has formally appealed for police intervention to maintain a secure academic environment.

The delegation was led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ahmad Muhammed Gumel, who was at the Command to formally welcome and congratulate the Commissioner on his appointment.

During a courtesy visit to the Command Headquarters in Dutse, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ahmad Muhammed Gumel, formally welcomed and congratulated the newly appointed Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala. Prof. Gumel highlighted the critical importance of the existing cordial relationship between the university and the police, emphasizing its role in security, intelligence sharing, crime prevention, and the protection of lives and property.

Prof. Gumel expressed significant concern over the "relatively new trend" of cult-related practices emerging among some students. He stressed the urgent need for a collective and proactive intervention to prevent these activities from becoming entrenched. The Vice-Chancellor also underscored the importance of promoting sound moral conduct, discipline, academic excellence, and responsible citizenship among the student body, stating that a safe and peaceful learning environment is essential for effective teaching, learning, and research.

Acknowledging the reported cult-related activities, CP Murtala stated that the Command would implement a preventive, intelligence-led, and community-oriented strategy. He urged university authorities to enhance their internal mechanisms for early detection and reporting of suspicious activities, emphasizing that security is a shared responsibility requiring collaboration among the police, university administration, students, parents, and community leaders.
