Jim Carrey could return as The Grinch in anticipated sequel

Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment are moving forward with a sequel to the 2000 hit film 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas.' The project aims to bring back key figures from the original movie, with significant anticipation surrounding the potential return of Jim Carrey as the iconic green character.

Carrey, whose performance as the Grinch was a memorable highlight of the first film, is reportedly in discussions to reprise his role. The production is also seeking to reunite much of the original creative team. Ron Howard, who directed the 2000 adaptation, is expected to return to direct and produce alongside his longtime partner Brian Grazer.

The screenplay is being developed by Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel. These writers and producers have a notable track record in television and comedy, with credits including 'Barry,' 'Silicon Valley,' 'Veep,' and 'Curb Your Enthusiasm.' Notably, they previously collaborated on the 2003 film adaptation of 'The Cat in the Hat,' another Dr. Seuss property.

The original film, released in November 2000, was a box office success, grossing approximately $260 million in the United States and $345 million worldwide. It also earned an Academy Award for Best Makeup for the transformative work done on Carrey. While the new film currently lacks an official title and release date, development is actively underway.
