Jinghua bed incident: Retrial sees Tsai Yu-chen break down, citing 4 years of no income and lifelong regret

Media personality Tsai Yu-chen became emotional during a retrial hearing for aggravated defamation, stemming from accusations made four years ago about the "Jinghua bed incident" involving former politician Chiang Hsiao-yen and a former Miss China, Chang Shu-chuan.

Tsai, along with fellow media figure Chou Yu-kou, was accused of revealing personal details of Chang, including her name, marital status, occupation, and photographs, during the 2022 Taipei mayoral election campaign. They alleged Chang was the woman involved with Chiang Hsiao-yen in the "Jinghua bed incident." Both were initially sentenced to one year and six months in prison by the Taipei District Court.

Appealing the verdict, Tsai broke down in court, expressing the profound pain the case has inflicted. She stated she has had no income for four years since the initial verdict, suffers from illness, and must care for her elderly mother. She also criticized Chou Yu-kou, accusing her of consistently shifting blame.

During the hearing, Tsai admitted to insufficient verification of information and apologized to Chang. She claimed she did not know who the actual protagonist of the "bed incident" was and that her discussions with Chou were documented. Her defense lawyer attributed her emotional state to the stress of the ongoing trial and her health issues.

Chou Yu-kou's defense argued that Chang, as a former Miss China and a public figure, was subject to commentary on her private life. They also noted Chou had apologized and believed that the television station and Tsai had conducted due diligence. The prosecution is seeking harsher sentences than the initial ruling.
