JLR Launches Limited Edition 'Defender Dakar' After Rally Victory

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is celebrating its triumph at the 2026 Dakar Rally by introducing a limited-edition model: the Defender Dakar. This special vehicle pays homage to the race-winning Defender D7X-R, which secured a dominant victory in the newly established Stock category, claiming first, second, and fourth places.

The Dakar Rally, known as the 'Inferno Race,' is one of the world's most demanding off-road competitions. The Stock category, introduced this year, specifically uses production vehicles modified for rally racing, allowing for a direct assessment of manufacturers' durability and performance under extreme conditions. The Defender team's success in this category underscores the vehicle's robust engineering and capability.

JLR plans to translate the D7X-R's race-proven technology and resilience into the Defender Dakar. The limited-production model will feature enhancements to its geometry, an off-road optimized body, reinforced suspension, and rally-inspired interior elements, including unique color options. It will be the first production model to bear the Dakar Rally badge.

We asked our engineers for a different level of challenge. First, to evolve the Defender OCTA into the D7X-R, and then, could we bring the Dakar Rally-winning D7X-R onto the road? The answer is the Defender Dakar.

Previewed at Monterey Car Week, the Defender Dakar is built on the same D7X architecture as the Defender OCTA and the D7X-R rally car. It will be powered by a 4.4-liter V8 gasoline twin-turbo engine, delivering 635 horsepower, paired with a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. Key specifications include 35-inch tires, advanced damping, and specialized driving modes like 'Flight Mode,' developed for rally cars to ensure smooth landings.

Mark Cameron, Defender Managing Director, stated that the Defender Dakar represents the culmination of extensive engineering challenges, embodying the spirit of adventure and overcoming the impossible. "This limited production model will encapsulate everything gained under the most extreme and fierce conditions imaginable, resulting in a true Defender forged with an unstoppable DNA," he said. Global pre-orders are set to begin in early 2025.
