João Fonseca withdraws from Cincinnati Masters due to injury

Brazilian tennis player João Fonseca has been forced to withdraw from the Cincinnati Masters 1000 tournament after sustaining an abdominal injury. The 18-year-old was set to play his third-round match against Christopher O’Connell but had to pull out due to the pain.

Fonseca explained on Instagram that he felt a pain in his left abdomen during training. Following medical examinations, he and his team made the decision to withdraw from the competition. He expressed his regret, stating, “See you next year,” on his social media.

During training, I felt a pain in the left side of my abdomen. After the exams, my team and I decided not to continue in the tournament.

Despite the setback at Cincinnati, Fonseca's team has indicated that the injury is not severe and should not impact his participation in the upcoming US Open. He is returning to Rio de Janeiro for treatment in Brazil. The withdrawal comes just five days before the start of the US Open, where his presence, currently ranked 26th in the ATP, was uncertain.

This season, Fonseca won the Rio de Janeiro doubles title with compatriot Marcelo Melo. He also reached the quarterfinals of the Roland Garros, where he defeated notable players like Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud. His performance at Wimbledon saw him reach the third round, while he was eliminated in the first round of the Australian Open.
