Johannesburg shooting: 12 killed, nine wounded in informal settlement, police say

At least 12 people died and nine were injured Tuesday evening when gunmen opened fire in an informal settlement in Cleveland, east of Johannesburg. South African Police Service officers responded to the shooting at the Jumpers informal settlement around 11:10 p.m., finding the victims scattered across the area.

Eight men and three women were pronounced dead at the scene. Another man died after being taken to the hospital. The nine wounded victims are receiving medical treatment. Police reported that more than 10 suspects arrived in a white Toyota Quantum near a petrol station in Cleveland. The suspects allegedly entered the settlement from both entrances, firing on residents in multiple locations before fleeing in the same vehicle.

The attackers' motivations remain unknown, and no arrests have been made. Police have initiated a manhunt for the suspects and are appealing for information from the public. South Africa has one of the highest murder rates globally, with an average of 60 homicides per day.
