John Malkovich Revisits Shaw Play After Earlier Scandal

The Berliner Ensemble is coming to Zagreb for the first time, bringing Tena Štivičić’s award-winning play “Dispersed” to the Croatian National Theatre on October 2 and 3.

Laura Linnenbaum directs the production, which Štivičić wrote specifically for the Berliner Ensemble. The Zagreb theater plans to present its own production of the play later. The Berlin company is appearing on a Croatian stage for the first time at the invitation of the Zagreb theater.

The Zagreb program will also feature Ljubljana’s Mladinsko Theatre on October 20. Its production “No Carmen!”, directed by Zana Hoxha, draws on motifs from Georges Bizet’s opera “Carmen.”

Meanwhile, John Malkovich is promoting Martin McDonagh’s new film “Wild Horse Nine” at the Venice Film Festival. The film is part of the festival’s competition program, and Malkovich attended its world premiere on September 3. The audience responded with about 13 minutes of standing applause.

Set during Chile’s 1973 coup, the film follows two CIA agents who find themselves on Easter Island amid a political crisis. Malkovich stars alongside Sam Rockwell, Steve Buscemi, Parker Posey, and Tom Waits.
