John Malkovich to Return to Israel With Satirical Musical The Music Critic

John Malkovich will return to Israel on April 13, 2027, to star in The Music Critic, a satirical theatrical musical at Tel Aviv’s Charles Bronfman Auditorium.

Created by Russian-German Jewish violinist and composer Aleksey Igudesman, the production places Malkovich in the role of an “evil critic.” He attacks famous composers with real historical reviews, saying Robert Schumann merely “fancies himself a composer” and calling Johannes Brahms a “giftless bastard.” The works of Ludwig van Beethoven and Frédéric Chopin also come under attack.

A live ensemble featuring Igudesman and pianist Hyung-ki Joo responds by performing music by Bach, Mozart, Debussy and Prokofiev. The show ends with “The Malkovich Torment,” in which Malkovich reads a real, severely negative critique of his own career.

The production has toured widely in Europe and the United States and was released as an official album. Its Israeli booking comes at an unusual moment for international performances in the country, which have faced widespread disruption and cultural boycotts during the ongoing regional conflict.
