Johnson-Thompson and Asher-Smith out of Commonwealths

The Commonwealth Games are facing a significant blow with the withdrawal of several high-profile British athletes, including Olympic silver medalist Katarina Johnson-Thompson. The heptathlete, a gold medalist at the 2018 Gold Coast Games and 2022 Birmingham Games, has pulled out due to an unspecified injury.

Johnson-Thompson's absence is compounded by the withdrawals of sprint stars Dina Asher-Smith and Olympic silver medalist Matt Hudson-Smith, who were slated to compete in relay events. Sprint teammate Daryll Neita has also been replaced in the squad. These departures cast a shadow over the event, particularly as its opening ceremony takes place.

We have got an incredible field of athletes. It is really important to make sure we have those athletes at the pinnacle of their career and you can see that across the sports. It is equally exciting to see, just like what happened in 2014 [previous Glasgow Games], which athletes this starts that breakthrough moment.

Adding to the challenges, other international stars are also opting out. St. Lucia's 100m Olympic champion Julien Alfred and Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh, a major figure in her sport, are prioritizing other competitions. This trend highlights a growing tension in the international sporting calendar, with athletes often choosing between the Commonwealth Games and more globally competitive events like the European Championships or Pan Pacific Swimming Championships.

Organizers are attempting to maintain a positive outlook, emphasizing the depth of talent and the potential for emerging athletes to make their mark. However, the event has also been hampered by logistical issues, including a late schedule confirmation and the withdrawal of its original host, Victoria, Australia. Commonwealth Sport chief executive Katie Sadlier acknowledged the difficulties, particularly the compressed 18-month preparation window, and indicated a desire for better coordination with other major events in the future.

This Games was a little bit of a challenge because we only had 18 months and it was really difficult to say 'where is the gap in the two-year period?'. As we move forward more of those conversations will happen.
