José Peña Fuentes, the president of the College of Journalists of Guayas, has passed away, the organization confirmed Saturday. The guild issued a statement expressing profound sorrow over his loss, noting that his departure leaves an "irreparable void" in their institution and in Guayaquil journalism.

Peña Fuentes was recognized for his leadership, dedication to service, and commitment to freedom of expression. The College of Journalists stated, "We express our deepest condolences and solidarity in the face of this irreparable loss that mourns not only his distinguished family but all journalism in the province and the country."

In the days leading up to his death, Peña Fuentes had been facing health problems and was hospitalized for approximately a week. He assumed the presidency of the guild in January 2025. Prior to this role, he had a career as a journalist at various radio stations.

His remains are being honored at Jardines de Esperanza cemetery, sala Piedad, with his funeral scheduled for 4:00 PM on the same day. His passing marks a significant loss for the journalistic community in Guayaquil and the wider province.
