Joseon Dynasty's 1398 Royal Decree by King Taejo Revealed to Public for First Time

The National Library of Korea has unveiled a significant piece of national heritage: a royal decree ('Wangji') from 1398, issued by King Taejo, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty. This marks the first public display of this historical document, offering a rare glimpse into the early days of the kingdom.

The royal decree ('Wangji') issued by King Taejo of Joseon when appointing an official is being revealed to the public for the first time.

This particular 'Wangji' appointed Yi Ji-dae to the position of naval commander of Gyeongsang Province. What makes this document particularly noteworthy is its age; it predates other known 'Wangji' by 18 years, including one designated as a national treasure. This makes it the earliest confirmed royal decree of its kind, providing invaluable insights into the administrative and political structures of Joseon Korea.
