Jourdain: Checo's F1 Return Inspires Mexican Talent, But Won't Change Sport's Essence

Mexico's rich motorsport heritage is keeping the dream of Formula One alive, with four promising drivers currently competing in feeder series. Noel León and Rafael Villagómez are in Formula 2, while Ernesto Rivera and José Garfias are racing in Formula 3, all aspiring to reach the pinnacle of motorsport.

Former racer and Mexico City Grand Prix ambassador Michel Jourdain Jr. emphasizes that Mexican talent has always been present. "There have always been Mexican drivers; since the Rodríguez brothers, there have been Mexican drivers capable of being there and competing with anyone worldwide, on all tracks," he stated. Jourdain believes it's natural to see Mexican drivers close to Formula One, given the country's deep-rooted tradition in the sport.

Sergio Pérez's return to Formula One has been a significant inspiration, motivating a new generation of young drivers and attracting greater support for national talent. "Since Checo returned to Formula One, with all the support from Escudería Telmex and the people who have supported him to be there, more kids have emerged," Jourdain acknowledged. He noted that increased support has helped these drivers get closer to their F1 aspirations.

Despite the complex and challenging path to Formula One, Jourdain remains hopeful. He believes that with continued development, Mexico could soon see two drivers in F1 again, similar to the era of Pérez and Esteban Gutiérrez. "It's difficult, there's still a long way to go, but they have definitely shown that they have the ability to be there, and if they continue, I think in a very short time we will have more Mexicans in Formula One," he concluded.
