Journalists and rights defenders need stronger protection, speakers say

A coordinated system is needed so journalists and human rights defenders in Bangladesh know where to turn when threats arise, speakers said at a seminar in the capital.

The event shared findings from a national study conducted under the European Union-funded FREEDOM project, led by Plan International Bangladesh and implemented by Manusher Jonno Foundation. The research covered all eight administrative divisions.

It found that legal, psychosocial, emergency and digital-security services are available, but providers largely work in isolation. EU representative Baiba Zarina said no threatened journalist or rights defender should be left uncertain about how to seek help.

A progressive society cannot be built without protecting fundamental rights and freedoms.

Political adviser to the prime minister Zahir Uddin Swapon called for closer cooperation among government, civil society and development partners. Other speakers urged rapid responses, timely legal action, stronger implementation of existing laws and policies, and greater awareness and youth engagement to address digital threats.

The study proposed three possible systems: a central national hub, a decentralised community network and a local coordination mechanism bringing together multiple stakeholders.
