Juan Manuel Lillo: Rafa Márquez's experienced assistant with Guardiola past joins Mexico's national team

The Mexican national team's coaching staff is set to gain significant experience with the appointment of Juan Manuel Lillo as an assistant to head coach Rafael Márquez. Lillo, a 60-year-old Spanish tactician, brings a wealth of knowledge from his extensive career in football management.

Lillo is no stranger to Mexican football, having previously managed Dorados de Sinaloa between 2005 and 2006. His international coaching journey spans Spain, Mexico, Colombia, Japan, China, and Qatar. He also served as an assistant coach for the Chilean national team under Jorge Sampaoli and later worked alongside Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

Notably, Lillo played a pivotal role in Guardiola's success at Manchester City, where they secured four Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and multiple other domestic honors. Guardiola himself has credited Lillo with influencing his decision to join Dorados, highlighting the Spanish coach's profound impact on his tactical thinking.

Despite never playing professional football, Lillo began his coaching career at the young age of 17 in his native Tolosa, Guipúzcoa, Spain. His early career included achieving two consecutive promotions with UD Salamanca, and at 29, he became the youngest coach to manage in LaLiga. Lillo's extensive experience makes him a key figure in Márquez's setup as Mexico prepares for the 2030 World Cup qualifiers.
