Juan Segura confirmed as U.S. Under Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs

Juan Pablo Segura has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve as the new Under Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs. This appointment places him at the helm of U.S. foreign policy and diplomatic efforts directed towards the Americas.

Segura brings a diverse background to the role, with experience spanning both the public and private sectors. He previously served as Secretary of Commerce for Virginia under former Governor Glenn Youngkin, where he managed 13 agencies, approximately 1,300 employees, and a $3 billion budget. His tenure also involved initiatives to streamline business operations within the state.

Before entering public service, Segura co-founded Babyscripts, a technology company focused on improving healthcare for pregnant women. A certified public accountant (CPA), he holds degrees in Accounting and East Asian Studies from the University of Notre Dame. Segura is also multilingual, speaking five languages, and previously translated a state manual for entrepreneurs into Spanish.

During his Senate confirmation hearing, Segura outlined key priorities for his tenure, emphasizing the strategic importance the administration places on the Western Hemisphere. He stated that the National Security Strategy under President Trump prioritizes the region, focusing on security, combating drug trafficking, protecting infrastructure, and expanding economic opportunities. Segura also highlighted the reaffirmation of the Monroe Doctrine to restore U.S. preeminence and counter the influence of global adversaries.

Segura also mentioned plans for new initiatives to bolster regional cooperation, including the "Shield of the Americas," the Coalition against Cartels in the Americas, and a focus on critical minerals. These efforts aim to strengthen bilateral and regional partnerships and build more secure and resilient supply chains.
