Juarez Cartel and Los Viagras Named Terrorist Organizations by U.S.

The U.S. government has officially designated two major Mexican criminal organizations, the Juarez Cartel and Los Viagras, as foreign terrorist organizations. This significant move, published in the Federal Register, aims to curb the influence of these groups through more stringent legal mechanisms. The Juarez Cartel has historically controlled key border crossings into Texas, while Los Viagras operate primarily out of the state of Michoacán.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that both organizations pose a "real threat" to U.S. national security and the economy, citing their violent activities that directly impact American stability. This designation brings the total number of Mexican organizations on the U.S. terror list to eight. It empowers federal agencies to conduct more aggressive operations against these entities and anyone collaborating with them.

The Juarez Cartel is known for its long-standing control over illicit trafficking routes along the border with El Paso. Despite numerous arrests of its leaders over the decades, the organization remains active, with border route control being its primary source of income and strategic importance. Analysts view this designation as a necessary tactical tool for Washington, facilitating actions in border regions where other criminal groups already face similar sanctions.

Los Viagras emerged in Michoacán following the self-defense movements between 2013 and 2014. The U.S. is also offering a reward for information leading to the capture of its leader. The intensified pressure on the Texas border reflects U.S. authorities' priority to contain these groups and prevent the expansion of drug trafficking and other illicit activities.
