Judge declines evaluation, ends 42-year judicial career in Dominican Republic

Judge Nancy I. Salcedo Fernández has decided not to undergo the performance evaluation process required to continue her tenure on the Supreme Court of Justice. This decision effectively concludes a distinguished 42-year career within the Judicial Branch.

In a formal communication to the President of the Republic and the National Council of the Magistracy (CNM), Luis Abinader, Salcedo Fernández stated her choice was made "with the serenity that comes from a life dedicated to duty." She notified the CNM that she would not participate in the evaluation initiated under the regulations for judges of the High Courts.

Throughout her extensive career, Salcedo Fernández held numerous significant positions. She served as a judge of peace, a judge of first instance, president of an Appellate Court, and a judge in the Second Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice. Her final role was as the substitute second justice to the president of the highest court.

She also expressed gratitude to the President of the Supreme Court, Luis Henry Molina, and the full court for proposing and appointing her as secretary to the National Council of the Magistracy. Salcedo Fernández invoked Article 56 of the Judicial Career Law regarding her retirement and conveyed her wishes for the CNM to continue strengthening the Supreme Court's composition.

The judge's communication was also sent to key figures including the President of the Senate, the President of the Chamber of Deputies, the President of the Constitutional Court, and several other legislators. Her decision comes on the same day the CNM was convened to begin evaluating judges whose constitutional terms have expired.
