Judge leaders by integrity, not authority

Power tests the character of leaders, and unchecked authority eventually destroys public trust in democracy, the writer argues. Authority can improve communities when leaders exercise it with humility, but corruption grows when they treat power as a right instead of a responsibility.

The column says leaders reveal themselves through their words. Requests for respect mean little when accompanied by contempt, while idle remarks, distorted agendas and deceptive strategies can become tools of manipulation rather than simple mistakes.

A watchman’s bell provides one illustration. If the watchman rings it repeatedly when there is no storm or enemy, people stop listening. When a real fire breaks out, his warning no longer carries weight. Leaders who “cry wolf” for political advantage face the same loss of credibility, and their voices may go unheard when genuine crises arise.

The writer also compares deceptive leaders to a spider’s web. A web may quietly trap flies in a corner, but once it spreads across a doorway and begins suffocating a household, people remove it. In the same way, leaders may hold followers through deception for a time, but communities will eventually reject methods that smother their lives.

Absolute power is dangerous because it removes accountability, the writer says. Respect for authority does not require acceptance of corruption. Societies should oppose deception, demand accountability and evaluate leaders according to the integrity of what they say and do. Those who value truth can produce justice, while those who rely on manipulation bring destruction.
