July Uprising Day Events Turn Violent in Bangladesh; Five Injured

Violence marred a July Mass Uprising Day commemoration in Narayanganj city, Bangladesh, leaving at least five people injured. Clashes broke out between activists of the Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) on Allama Iqbal Road, near Government Tolaram College.

The confrontation began around 12:15 p.m. when leaders from the rival student organizations allegedly exchanged provocative remarks. Tensions quickly escalated, leading to chases and physical altercations in the Chashara area. Police were deployed and managed to disperse the groups about an hour and a half later.

Both sides traded accusations. Amit Hasan, president of Shibir's Narayanganj city unit, claimed JCD activists attacked their members, resulting in three injuries. Conversely, Monir Hossain Zia, JCD's Tolaram College unit president, stated that Shibir activists initiated the attack after JCD members protested their speeches, leading to two JCD injuries. Police confirmed four to five injuries and stated that no arrests have been made yet, but legal action will follow an analysis of CCTV footage.

Following the police intervention, Shibir activists departed the scene. JCD activists, joined by members of Jubo Dal, later organized processions carrying sticks through various parts of the city.
