Jung Cheong-rae receives 380 million won in donations overnight, asks supporters to donate elsewhere

Jung Cheong-rae, a candidate for the leadership of South Korea's Democratic Party, announced on July 17 that his campaign had received an overwhelming amount of donations in a single night. He stated that over 380 million won (approximately $260,000 USD) poured into his donation account after a YouTube broadcast mentioned his campaign was still short of its 20 million won goal.

Expressing deep gratitude, Jung described the influx of funds as "tearfully thankful" but also a "big problem" because he would have to return 360 million won. He noted that with the donation accounts closed for the weekend, funds continued to arrive. He urged supporters to redirect their contributions to the donation accounts of his fellow party members Choi Min-hee, Lee Sung-yoon, and Han Min-soo, who are running for the supreme council positions and are considered close allies.

Jung also mentioned that as a party leader candidate, he is permitted to raise up to 150 million won separately and will soon open a dedicated account for these funds. He expressed his thanks in advance for contributions directed to that account.

In separate posts, Jung shared photos from his campaign tour in Jeonnam Gwangju. He conveyed his appreciation for the warm reception from taxi drivers at Gwangju Songjeong Station, saying their "thumbs up" for him gave him strength. He also posted pictures from regional party member meetings in Gwangju Buk-gu and Seo-gu, highlighting his engagement with local party organizations.
